Amerikanske Roy Lichtenstein var en af de centrale kunstnere inden for Popkunstbevægelsen og i lighed med Andy Warhol overførte han ikoner og det visuelle udtryk fra populærkulturen til kunstens verden. Lichtenstein er særligt kendt for sine iøjnefaldende malerier, der tager udgangspunkt i det visuelle udtryk fra 1940’erne og 1950’ernes amerikanske tegneserier. Han overførte trykteknikkens skematik, som udgøres af konturer, striber og prikker, til lærredets overflade, hvilket på næsten oprørsk vis står i stærk kontrast til det maleriske udtryk, som karakteriserer den amerikanske abstrakte ekspressionisme, der gik forud for Popkunsten. Det store billede Figurer i landskab afspejler tydeligt Roy Lichtensteins ikoniske stil, og er malet efter at kunstneren i 1970’erne havde besøgt kunstmuseet Louisiana i Humlebæk. Her er langt fra tale om et landskabsbillede i traditionel forstand. En kvinde i profil, der antageligt er kunstnerens egen hustru, indgår som motiv sammen med en søjle og et udsnit med en slipseknude, og selvom der i billedet anes en horisontlinje med kig til Øresund, en sejlbåd og to måger, så fremstår motivet snarere som et kaotisk puslespil, der som følge af trykteknikkens æstetik og billedets monumentale størrelse lettest lader sig samle på afstand.
The US artist Roy Lichtenstein was one of the major artists of the Pop Art movement. Like Andy Warhol, he transferred icons and visual expression from popular culture to the world of art. Lichtenstein is especially famous for his striking paintings, based on the visual idiom of comic strips from the 1940s and 1950s. He transferred the processes of printing technology – its contours, stripes and dots – to the surface of the canvas. The result is an almost seditious contrast to the artistic expression that characterises American Abstract Expressionism, the predecessor of Pop Art. The large picture, Figures in Landscape clearly reflects Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic style and was painted following the artist’s visit to Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk in the 1970s. It could not be further from a traditional landscape painting. A woman in profile, presumably the artist’s own wife, is juxtaposed with a column and a section with a knotted tie. Even though the picture features a horizontal line with a view of the Sound, a sailboat and two seagulls, the motif is actually more like a chaotic puzzle, which, on account of the aesthetics of printing technology and the monumental size of the picture, is best assimilated from a distance.
