The painter Axel Bentzen (1893-1952) was particularly well known for his portraits, interiors and landscapes. His early works are dominated by inspiration from Naturalism, and later Impressionism with its approach to colour and brushwork. Other works seem to be created under the influence of Cubism and Expressionism. The colours blue and yellow recur frequently in Bentzen's works. In 1930 he received the Eckersberg Medal.
