The period 1910-1930 is characterised by a variety of Modernist formal experiments: Futurist, Cubist, Expressionist and Symbolist trends can be detected in much of the art of this time. Naturalistic observation, or the recording of one's surroundings, is replaced by a more subjective, interpretative treatment of the subject. Stylisation and concentration on formal instruments are hallmarks of the art of this period. A good example of the period's Modernist style is Vilhelm Lundstrøm's painting Figure Group Around a Table. The multiple geometric shapes and stylisation of the subject point towards Cubism; the strength of colour, the contours and the expansive coloured surfaces to Expressionism and Symbolism.
