An abstract artistic trend, which appeared in Russia just before the Revolution. The intention of the Constructivists was for art to become an objective, scientific study of abstract properties (picture surface, construction, line, and colour). They also wanted this art to relate to contemporary social and industrial requirements, because they associated it with architecture and even experimented with designing clothes. Outside Russia Constructivism had a powerful impact: for example, on Bauhaus. The term is also used to describe later abstract trends in European painting.
