Else Alfelt was a member of the Cobra group, but in contrast to the other members, she was made neither with masks nor other figures. She created her abstract paintings against a background of nature impressions. “Earth – Water and Mountains” is one of a series of “creation pictures”, which are concerned with the creation of the world. The picture is built up on a network of diagonal lines, so that it resembles splinters of glass in a kaleidoscope. It is all held together by the white, circular sun above. The colours are kept within a narrow range, and they refer to nature’s own colours: the water is blue, as is the sky, and the mountains are brown, grey and green.
