Girl with Pigtail

The sculptor Erik Thommesen prefers to work in wood, which he has fashioned almost exclusively into stylised human figures.

Girl with Pigtail is reduced to the smallest number of elements possible: The body is formed by an elongated cylinder, the head by an openwork barrel shape and the plait by a long thin cylindrical form running along the girl’s right shoulder, separated from the main part of the body. Body and plait together thus form the basis of the sculpture and support its elongated form.

Erik Thommesen is often placed among the members of the Cobra movement on account of his interest in things such as African sculpture, but the technique of wood carving means that he never conformed to Cobra’s spontaneous working method.
