Anna Ancher was one of the Skagen painters, who helped to introduce plein air painting into Danish art. She grew up in Skagen and was thus the only one of the group who had a local background. Her knowledge of the families in Skagen meant that she could often get close to them, as is shown by this small painting. Anna Ancher usually painted interiors, but she nevertheless worked according to the principles of plein air painting
Anna Ancher’s painting shows a motif that is typical of her: ordinary people busy with their everyday work. We see an elderly man and woman engaged on sheering a sheep while a little girl, perhaps their grand-daughter, looks on. The motif is painted in a naturalist manner and gives the impression of cohesion and presence.
