Two Breton Women Part after a Chat

Two women wearing traditional Breton dress have met on the road. They are now leaving each other so as to continue with their busy everyday lives, one with a child in her arm, the other carrying a bowl. But the artist does not focus on the story in the picture. He is interested in the movement, of which he gives an impression by basing the composition on the use of diagonal lines. J.F. Willumsen painted this picture in Pont-Aven in Brittany. Here, at the end of the 19th century, there was a colony of artists seeking a way back towards greater simplicity and truth in art. The starting point for their formal experiments was the local population, who lived simply, uninfluenced by modern life and industrialisation
