Collection

Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg is a museum for modern and contemporary art. Its collection consists of nearly 4,000 works spanning more than 100 years of art history. Many of the works came to the museum through various private Danish collections, enabling Kunsten to present a strong narrative of Danish modernism in the 20th century. This is complemented by significant examples of international art from before and after the Second World War, as well as recent contemporary works.

Kunsten Collection was created with the ambition of making the museum's collection more accessible to as many people as possible and using it in new ways, driven by users' curiosity and engagement. Changing collection exhibitions and displays offer the opportunity to experience part of Kunsten's collection physically when visiting the museum. However, this represents only a small fraction of the total collection. With Kunsten Collection, you can explore the collection in your own way—whether you're curious about works by Asger Jorn or Julie Nord or simply wish to explore and be surprised.

Loan of Works

Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg lends works to museums and exhibition venues that meet our security requirements and have the necessary expertise in handling artworks.

To request a loan from Kunsten’s collection, a written application must be submitted with details about the work(s) requested, exhibition dates, and a concept description. The process begins only once a written application is received. We appreciate receiving loan requests well in advance, preferably 6 months before the exhibition opening.

Loan Procedure:

  • When a loan agreement is made, the museum’s loan terms must be signed alongside a loan contract. See loan terms here.
  • No later than 2 months before the exhibition opens, we must receive the signed loan contract and know the desired delivery date of the work.
  • The work may be delivered no earlier than 2 weeks before the exhibition opening and must be returned no later than 2 weeks after the exhibition closes. A copy of the insurance certificate must be received before transportation.

Transport:

  • Transportation must be arranged using an approved fine art transporter with a climate-controlled vehicle. The borrower is responsible for arranging transport in cooperation with a transport company. Transport dates for pickup and return must be coordinated with Kunsten’s registrar, Lone Olesen (+45 31 99 41 21 / lol@kunsten.dk).
