Art composed of simple, non-figurative visual forms and associated with a conception of structure as a coherent principle of organisation (Theo van Doesburg. Manifesto of Concrete Art. 1930). The label was preferable to "abstract art", because the artists' modus operandi is the opposite of the abstract process. Max Bill defined Concrete art as an effort "to display abstract ideas in a sensual and tangible form."
