Art, which makes use of imagery from consumer society and mass culture (for example, drawings, pin-up pictures and advertisements), but does so with a mixture of irony and affection. Pop Art emerged in the 1950s with studies of popular urban culture, especially by the Independent Group in London. The movement flourished in the 1960s as an important element in art, having adopted certain ideas with roots in Dadaism. It affected not only the visual arts, but also handicraft.
