Mike Kelley – Apology (from "Ausstraliana") #1-5 (1984)

Mike Kelley’s work features 5 drawings, which he created as a commentary on the celebration that took place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the settlement of the white population in Australia. According to the artist, given the social and political situation in Australia at the time, this was absurd. Instead, Kelley’s work aims to direct our attention to the injustices and disagreements between the indigenous people and the whites in relation to the colonisation of Australia. In the work they take the form of a number of ‘excuses’, including: “now that this has been done it will never have to be done again.” The excuses are formulated in Gothic script – a typography, which actually belongs to historical texts, and which was used, for example, by the Nazis. This reinforces the impression of a visualisation of the control and dominance by the ruling powers and power structures. In this respect, the artist is indicating how language itself and the written word can be used as weapons. As in this work, Kelley’s other works often feature a gritty expression with a socio-critical angle. Often they also fight directly against ugliness and topics such as violations, traumas and taboos that are generally swept under the carpet.
