Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer. His works clearly stem from his photographs of fashion and celebrities: his career from the early 1940s onwards. During his long career, Avedon created his own, highly distinctive style, presenting the person in the photograph in isolation, detached from any definable or narrative background. As a result, the viewer is directly confronted with the subject. The two portraits in the exhibition come from the series In the American West, which Avedon worked on between 1979 and 1984. During that period, he travelled the length and breadth of the US highways, visiting 17 US states and creating a total of almost 800 photographic portraits, 124 of which he selected. The portraits intensify the human presence at the expense of everything external. Against dazzling white backdrops, we are confronted by a one-armed farmer from Dakota and a young couple – a rodeo rider and his assistant – from Sidney, Iowa. They are penetrating studies of individuals, with whom we come face to face as we encounter the works.
