SUPERFLEX – Flooded McDonald's (2009)

In this 20-minute video work, the internationally-acclaimed Danish artist group SUPERFLEX has flooded a branch of McDonald’s with water. The water level rises slowly in the empty restaurant, while burger packaging, soda mugs and a large model of the burger chain’s mascot, Ronald McDonald float around in the water and the lights short circuit. In many ways, the worldwide US burger chain McDonald’s is an ultimate US symbol, associated with consumer culture, spiritual decline and capitalism. This humorous, yet disturbing work is a direct critique of the ever-increasing Western consumer culture rooted in the United States, which many people regard as complicit in the exploitation of the planet’s resources and man-made climate change of recent years. SUPERFLEX describe their artworks as ‘Tools’ aimed at the current reality in which we live, to be utilised directly in social and political situations. Their works can thus be regarded as interventions – in both a concrete and figurative sense – commenting on, and interceding in social, economic and political structures, created with the aim of directing our attention to issues in the world and society of which we are part.
