Enter the very heart of Kunsten. This exhibition is an opportunity to explore a number of specially selected works from Kunsten’s collection, displayed in Aalto’s unique sky-lit galleries.
Kunsten’s collection is the very heart of the museum and the basis of its activities. It offers insight into the past 100+ years of the history of art.
If you delve into the collection’s 4,000 or so Danish and international works of art, you will find an Aladdin’s cave of artistic expressions and statements, all of which offer perspectives on what it means to be human – both in ourselves and in relation to the world around us.
Kunsten takes a similarly active approach to the collection, which is part of our common cultural heritage. What is it important to collect for posterity as an expression of the age of which we are part? Is there anything we have not looked at across the years?
This exhibition provides insight into some of the principal trends featured in Kunsten’s collection. It features, for example, the dreamlike works of the surrealists, the poetic bronze sculptures of Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Niki de Saint Phalle’s iconic Nana with Ball, and a number of contemporary works that Kunsten recently acquired for its collection – presented in the museum for the very first time.

Kunsten’s collection consists of almost 4,000 works of art – both Danish and international – mainly from the early 20th century to the present day. The collection is constantly expanding and evolving. Works are regularly placed in different contexts, both here at the museum and around the world – for example, when loaned to other museums.
But the museum only has space to present a tiny fraction of its collection. That’s why, to make the collection more accessible, we created the Kunsten Collection database, where you can enjoy a digital experience of the entire collection.
On collection.kunsten.dk you can freely access all the works in the collection and find your own way of appreciating Kunsten’s collection, whether you’re curious about the works of Asger Jorn or Julie Nord, or merely wish to explore.
You can study the works in detail or save your favourites in My Collections, where you can collect works that you picked out from Kunsten’s collection.
