A technique invented by Picasso and Braque in their Analytic Cubist period. They began to glue fragments of newspapers and other printed material on to their compositions as examples of the tactile reality, which the Cubist analysis was setting out to destroy. The collage technique was later used by the Dada artists and Surrealists as a means of creating an irrational conjunction between "found" images. However the collage technique is used, it aims at fracturing the unity of the composition, intentionally creating spatial disharmony and irrational dimensions.
