Workshop: Painting Xperiments

Away with neatness and goodbye to old habits. In this workshop we’ll create space for experiments with paint, combining unusual materials and methods.

What happens when you pour neon yellow paint over a plaster sculpture?

What happens to colours when you paint them on the soles of your dirty shoes?

Our Painting Xperiments workshop is inspired by the artistic laboratory of Eks-skolen, whose work is currently on display in the exhibition Gernes x Kirkeby. In the spirit of Eks-skolen, we’ll be giving the classic way of working with artistic media a jolly good shake-up. Each time, we’ll embark on a new painting experiment, in which anyone can take part – regardless of their experience.

Together we’ll kiss goodbye to neat brushstrokes and the concept of a perfect lake in a forest. Instead, we’ll explore the properties of paint in totally new ways, conducting off-the-wall experiments that challenge both frame and canvas in terms of what painting can do.

One of our expert professional artists will take you on a voyage of new discoveries in the wonderful world of creativity. We’ll work with quality materials and tools, and maybe even venture into one of the current exhibitions for inspiration. There’ll also be time for a glass of wine or a cup of coffee.

About Gernes x Kirkeby and Eks-skolen

Based on works in the collections of Kunsten and Louisiana, the exhibition  Gernes x Kirkeby spotlights two key figures in the history of Danish art: Poul Gernes (1925-1996) and Per Kirkeby (1938-2018).

The two artists made a major impression on post-1960 modern art and represent new art at a time of upheaval and an infinite number of experiments. At the same time, though, the expression of the two artists and their understanding of artistic experiment were very different.

Gernes and Kirkeby were key members of the Experimental Art School (Eks-skolen) during the 1960s. The aim of the school was to be a kind of artistic laboratory and an innovative counterpart to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Eks-skolen remains a phenomenon in the history of Danish art.
