Denmark starts global debate on art and culture

Apr 22nd 2020, 2:02pm

danish.global.culture.talks is a new platform for debating art and culture. It has emerged out of an urgent need to debate the meaning and relevance of culture and art today in an ever-changing global context. This has become even more relevant as a result of the current global crisis caused by Corona. Culture and the arts have been ‘forgotten’, as if they were icing on the cake instead of the glue that keeps society together.

danish.global.culture.talks is live-streamed panel talks presented by Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and Nordic.la on the subject of culture and the arts in the age of Corona. The intention is to debate and discuss the importance of art and culture and how they remain relevant and meaningful both locally and globally. Therefore, in the first online sessions, Kunsten has teamed up with our good friends at Nordic.la to broaden the global and cultural perspective in panel sessions with leading artists, business people and thinkers from Denmark and the rest of the world.

In the panel there will among others be representatives from Guggenheim Museum, Sydney Opera House, Burning Man Festival, LEGO Foundation, artists and musicians.

The key questions in the first online sessions look at how the arts and culture will, or can transform the way we perceive the world in times of crisis, and help us overcome, understand and move on from the Corona crisis.

"The idea has emerged from an urgent need for art and culture to remain relevant in the current Corona crisis. As a cultural institution and art museum, we need to be bold and visionary on behalf of art and culture, and debate and develop things, even though at times it may seem difficult when people are suffering in the current health and economic crisis." Lasse Andersson. Director, Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg

Now is the time to invest in art and culture. Our world and everyday life is now different from what we are used to – and this crisis will maybe change our lives forever. Traveling and international artistic co-creation in an off-line setting is more difficult than ever and therefore is dialogue around art and creativity essential to explore the possible ways forward. Kristian Riis, CEO of NordicLA and guitarist in Nephew.

Every session will start with a piece of art or music performance. All artists performing or participating in talks will receive a fee which is possible with geneuros support from Spar Nord Foundation and The North Denmark Region .

"The Spar Nord Foundation finds it important to debate and discuss the importance of art and culture even in times of crisis.  Art Live does exactly this at a very high level and with a global outlook, so we are happy to support the project for realization. "

All sessions are co-curated by Lasse Andersson and Kristian Riis.
